"I’ve sort of been thinking - correct me if I’m wrong - but most of the stuff Britain has won gold medals in over the last few years have involved sitting down; sailing, rowing, cycling. We did at Sochi, the skeleton where she’s lying down - it’s even better! You know, I don’t like to lie down at that speed, but I can lie there and reflect on the idea that…”

Hemingway and James Joyce were drinking buddies in Paris. Joyce was thin and bespectacled; Hemingway was tall and strapping. When they went out Joyce would get drunk, pick a fight with a bigger guy in the bar and then hide behind Hemingway and yell, “Deal with him, Hemingway. Deal with him.”

Between this and the story about him reassuring F. Scott Fitzgerald re dick size, I’m developing a picture of Hemingway as the mother hen of the disaffected white male literary set of the early 20th century.

Paul McCartney and Bloody Sunday (a companion to my John Lennon and the IRA post.)
In response to the events of Bloody Sunday in January 1972 (where 13 civilians in Northern Ireland were murdered by the British Army) Paul wrote ‘Give Ireland Back to the Irish’, in support of the Republican cause.
Upon hearing the song,  EMI Chairman Sir John Lockwood phoned McCartney to tell him that the song wouldn’t be released as it was too inflammatory, the lyrics of which included:

Tell me how would you like it,If on your way to work,You were stopped by Irish soldiers.Would you lie down, do nothing,Would you give in, go beserk.
Give Ireland back to the Irish,Don’t make them have to take it away.Give Ireland back to the Irish,Make Ireland Irish today.

Paul, however, told him that he "felt strongly about it and they had to release it. [Lockwood] said, ‘Well it’ll be banned’, and of course it was. I knew [it] wasn’t an easy route, but it just seemed to me to be the time. All of us in Wings felt the same about it”.
Coincidentally, It was the first Wings song to feature their Northern Irish guitarist Henry McCullough, whose brother was "beaten up because of it. The thugs found out that Henry was in Wings."
The song was immediately banned from broadcast within the UK, and when being described in the charts was only referred to as, "a record by the group Wings." Despite the ban the song reached #16 in the UK charts, #21 in the US Hot 100, and #1 in both the Republic of Ireland and Spain.

88 plays

Her eyes they shone like diamonds,

I thought her the Queen of the land,

And her hair it hung over her shoulder,

Tied up with a black velvet band.

This is one of the most perfect blogs I've seen on here. Harry Styles, 8 out of 10 cats & history facts on one page. Perfectooooo

Oh my God thank you. I sometimes worry that I should have separate blogs for everything, history on one, comedy on another etc. so I’m glad to hear you like mix :) I haven’t been blogging much recently seeing as I’ve a degree to finish, but I’ve got more free time now to post stuff.
